Do you have the right toothbrush?
Do you have the right toothbrush? Do you also wonder what toothbrush is the most suitable for you? Do you know if you want to trust alluring ads? In that case, these lines are dedicated to you!
The fifth-year student of the Faculty of Medicine of Palacký University in Olomouc was happy to answer our questions.

Do you think that nowadays choose brushes badly? How do they make mistakes?

It should be remembered that the type of brush does not matter as much as the brushing technique. The biggest mistake in choosing is a hard toothbrush because it hurts dental tissues. Furthermore, it is important that the brush fits well in your hand, depending on its anatomical shape. The wear indicator can also be an advantage.

Is it true on the Czech market that quality is directly proportional to price? Or the most expensive ones
aren’t as good as the ads claim?

Price does not always tell about the quality of the brush. It is not guaranteed that the expensive brush will be better. Rather, it depends on each of us what type and what brand suits us.

What criteria must the correct brush meet?

In any case, it must not be hard, at least medium,
soft in people with periodontal disease. Today’s brushes already meet the standard when
certain parameters have been set – eg fiber count, fiber arrangement, etc.

What about electric toothbrushes? Would you recommend them to us? What are their advantages and disadvantages?

Compared to hand brushes, in most cases they have not been shown to be more
effective. Especially not suitable for patients with periodontal disease, because they
push plaque into the gingival gland, so the plaque gets to the place where it
is to be removed. An electric toothbrush is beneficial for disabled patients who have difficulty coordinating movements, and can be used by people with low caries and a healthy periodontium.

How often should a brush be replaced with a new one?

Replacement is recommended once every 3 months, it is good to have a wear indicator on the brush.

Should one have more brushes at home? One hard, the other soft?

No, just one brush, either medium or soft.

What cleaning aids should you still use?

A dental floss that can be used to clean the interdental spaces, which are not where the toothbrush gets, should be a daily aid. Interdental brushes have the same function, which is suitable for people with wider interdental spaces. (there are several sizes). It is recommended to clean the interdental spaces once a day in the evening. Furthermore, there are mouthwashes that serve as a supplement, not as a replacement for manual cleansing.

Do you have some tips for our readers how to clean your teeth properly?
