Coronavirus advises for pregnant and lactating women. The Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) has published a series of advice for pregnant and lactating women regarding the coronavirus emergency.
Coronavirus advises for pregnant and lactating women
Here are the specific recommendations of the ISS.
For pregnant women:
- In the absence of a vaccine against Sars-CoV-2 and information about the susceptibility of pregnant women to the pathology of new coronavirus, it is recommended the common actions of primary prevention actions that provide for frequent and accurate hand hygiene and attention to avoid contact with sick or suspect subjects, according to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and international institutions (also extended to contacts of pregnant women)
- In the current state of knowledge for women with Sars-CoV-2 there is no elective indication for cesarean section . As for the management of suspicious or certain cases, please refer to what is recommended for the management of infectious conditions including, where necessary, the isolation of mother and / or newborn. A choice, the latter, which must be carefully considered by the hospital team together with the mother, evaluating the risks and benefits of this choice. However, it is not known whether vertical transmission, i.e. from mother to fetus, of Sars -CoV-2 occurs: from the first cases described, the virus was not detected in amniotic fluid or in neonatal blood taken from the umbilical cord and no newborn born to a mother with Sars-CoV-2 was found to be virus-positive.
For breastfeeding women:
- Given the scientific information available at the moment and the protective potential of breast milk, it is believed that in case the mother is carrying out the diagnostic tests or is affected by Covid-19, her clinical conditions allow it and she wishes, then breastfeeding should be started and/or maintained, directly at the breast or with squeezed breast milk. It must be said that the responsible Covid-19 virus has not been detected so far in breast milk collected after the first feed (colostrum) of the affected women; in at least one case, however, antibodies to Sars-CoV-2 were detected.
- To reduce the risk of transmission to the child, preventive procedures such as hand hygiene and the use of a mask during feeding are recommended, according to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health. In the event that mother and child have to be temporarily separated, it is recommended to help the mother to maintain milk production through manual or mechanical pressing.
Even the squeezing of breast milk, manual or mechanical, must be carried out following the same hygienic indications.
I thought it important to publish these tips, based on correct information on this health emergency that is affecting many countries, not just our Italy.
