Coronavirus survives 9 days on dry surfaces. A very interesting new article has just been published in the Journal of Hospital Infection about the remarkable survival capabilities of Coronavirus 2019 (SARS-CoV-2).
This group of German researchers reports that the transmission of SARS-Cov-2 has been demonstrated from man to man with an incubation between 2-10 days with diffusion facilitated by the emission of droplets in the breath, hands or contaminated surfaces.
The researchers focused on this last aspect, who made a review of the literature to evaluate on one hand the survival of SARS-Cov-2 on inanimate (biologically inactive) surfaces and on the other the ability to inactivate disinfectants with biocidal capacity.
Coronavirus survives 9 days on dry surfaces
The analysis of 22 studies has shown that in the past Corona series viruses such as SARS, MERS and endemic Coronaviruses (HCoV) can persist on surfaces of metal, plastic or glass objects for more than 9 days, but can be efficiently inactivated by disinfection procedures with a mixture of 62% -71% ethanol + 0.5% of hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen peroxide) + 0.1% of sodium hypochlorite within 1 minute of treatment. Other types of mixtures were lower.
From these data on previous Coronaviruses, the authors expect similar results in the disinfection of surfaces contaminated with SARS-CoV-2.
From these data, all that remains is to note that the disinfection/sanitization of the areas where they have been infected take on the same importance as their isolation to reduce the risk of transmission.
I think of the enormous work we have to do here in Italy on public transport (trains, planes, buses, subways) and in public places still very popular … starting with hospitals, clinics, and professional offices, natural places of concentration of possible infected patients.
The story of the Codogno Hospital with the first patient who has repeatedly arrived at the PS and the 8 infected nurses, now in quarantine, as well as the problems at the Lodi Hospital where many Codogno patients poured after the closure of the Codogno PS teaches.
