In the new guidelines, which are published in detail in the journal Pediatrics, the Academy of Nutrition’s Committee points out that certain nutrients such as proteins, zinc, iron, folic acid, certain vitamins (A, D, B6, B12) and polyunsaturated fatty acids, play a very important role in the brain development of the child. If the diet does not include these valuable nutrients, the child may have chronic brain malfunctions, experts say. 

According to Dr. Sarah Jane Schwarzenberg, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of the University of Minnesota and a member of the Committee on Nutrition, breast milk is recommended for newborns up to the age of six months. After six months, however, it does not provide the child with the amount of iron and zinc it needs, so the child must additionally consume foods provided by these ingredients. Many baby foods are fortified with both iron and zinc, Schwarzenberg says, but mashed meat is a good source.

Emphasize variety

After breastfeeding is stopped, an ideal diet for a child is one that includes a variety of foods, such as high-protein (lean) meat and high in vitamins and minerals fruits and vegetables. “Babies are very prone to nutritional deficiencies in the first months of life,” says Dr. Schwarzenberg, according to TIME magazine. “Their brains are growing rapidly from the age of 12 to 24 months, so we want pediatricians to recommend a variety of foods rather than just telling parents to give their children specific foods.” “Unless developmental milestones are achieved of the first 1,000 days of a child’s life it is not possible to go back in time and change that, “the expert said.
