At the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and the Obstetrics Service of the University Hospital of Torrejón (Madrid) has conducted a study to verify what benefits physical exercise brings to pregnancy. And they have reached the following conclusion: it is good for the heart of the fetus and for the mother to regain her weight after childbirth. The work has been published in the journal Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The study, which is also part of a doctoral thesis, was conducted with 85 healthy pregnant women. Of these, 42 followed a moderate and supervised exercise program of one hour, three days per week from the first quarter, and 43 were out of the program.
According to Rubén Bakarat, of the Faculty of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences-INEF, of the UPM, when the pregnant woman follows a program of physical activities the tests show that she has better results in two parameters that measure the proper functioning of the heart Fetal: the fetal cardiac ejection fraction and the pulsatility index of the ductus arteriosus.
In contrast, in other fetal cardiac variables, no differences were found between the group of women who exercised and those who did not. This has a second reading: physical activity is not harmful to the heart of the fetus. They also investigated whether there were differences in weight between pregnant women who exercised and those who did not, in the 20th, 28th, 36th and 38th weeks of pregnancy. And the answer was negative: both groups gained weight equally. However, when they analyzed whether the practice of physical activity influenced the recovery of the physical state prior to pregnancy, they found that the weight loss six weeks after delivery was greater in women who had followed the physical activity program than in those who remained sedentary.
In addition, the authors of the work remember that pregnancy is a process that is not free of physical and mental stress, and the practice of an attractive and supervised sports activity helps to maintain the quality of life of the pregnant woman.
