Saturated Fat: Should We Eat Little or Not at All? Excluding saturated fats instead of partially reducing them may mean that we also lose important nutrients, according to a new study from the University of Copenhagen.
Eggs, dark chocolate, meat and cheese, for example, are high in fat but also contain many nutrients and vitamins.
Plenty of scientists from Europe and the United States have published studies calling for saturated fats not to be “demonized”.
Such fats are found in milk, cheese, meat, butter and chocolate and although they have been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, they also have many health benefits.
“The recommendation of a ban on saturated fat can also cause a decrease in nutrient intake,” say scientists at the University of Copenhagen.
“High consumption of fatty foods can increase cholesterol
, which can lead to cardiovascular disease. But the same foods also provide vitamins, minerals and trace elements, protein, iron and zinc, ”the researchers said.
The study’s lead, Dr. Astrup, and his colleagues report that “earlier interest in reducing saturated fat has led to more trans – fat foods”.
“These processed foods are made by adding hydrogen to vegetable oils and are more about fried foods, which we know how harmful they are to health,” the scientists explain.
“People should not think that they do not need to reduce saturated fat. Instead, we advise people to follow a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and nuts. They can consume almost everything, but they should not forget about moderation and daily exercise, even in the form of a leisurely stroll, “the researchers conclude.
